Photography Of The Day – Basilica of San Bernardino, L’Aquila
The church was built, with the adjacent cloister, between 1454 and 1472. The corpse of St. Bernardino da Siena is guarded inside the church in a mausoleum and it was declared a Basilica Minor in May 1946 by Pope Pius XII.
The huge earthquake that struck L’Aquila in April 2009 seriously damaged the apse and the bell tower of the Basilica. In May 2015, after a skilled and deep restoration, the Basilica was reopened.
